So, You're In A Band?
found on your rock 'n' roll party source
written by susan w clark, edited by George (Plastic) [ read unedited ]
posted Thu 20 Mar 10:33am

Plastic
susan w clark writes, "I know from seeing many profiles that many of us are musically inclined, and as such, are linking to our band's pages. But what if I don't have the time to search for every user profile with their own band? Particularly since there is no 'master' list of users to surf through, it seems difficult to find out about this. I propose that we have a throwdown in the Music section where you hype your own band and include links and stories for us all. You may even sell a CD to someone on your pals list! Mmmm... profit. You could also meet people to play shows with on tour, find a place to crash, etc.

"I know that other sites exist for things like this, but i'd be curious to hear the music made by the opinionmakers on Plastic. If you aren't a musician, tell us what you would do in a band, if you could."

My band is Soylent Gringo . Picture 80s video games vs. garage rock vs. robot karaoke. Sarcastic lyrics with a theme of anti-utopian existence. Particularly relevant to these times are the tracks "Let Star a War (parts 1 and 2)" and "G is for Gihad". 12 Mp3s available for download at soylentgringo.com; we are in Portland, Oregon. Unsigned.

I'm in "Pretty Good White" we're a Great White tribute band outta Jersey.

Before we were "Zinger" a Winger tribute band, but then decided that Winger was actually a pretty lame band.

Before that we were "Unwarranted" a Warrant tribute band, but then decided that Warrant was actually a pretty lame band, too.

Before that, when we were all still living in Quebec we were Poisson, a "Poison" tribute band that played all songs in French.

And before all that we were Baezelbub, a Heavy Metal Joan Baez tribute band inspired by Judas Priest's cover of "Diamonds and Rust." We played Death Metal versions of Joan Baez classics., along with the odd Bob Dylan duet.

I write downtempo music somewhat similar (though I hope not to deceive by the comparison) to boards of canada or pole. Some of it is online at mp3.com/mutagene, some live footage is up on my website and I have an album for on Databloem Records which is available for sale at Groove Unlimited amongst other online distributors.

I also did some video game remixes/arrangements, which are up on the ever-entertaining remix site Overclocked Remix.

5.  This has been an Art Threat

The last band I was in was Proletarian Art Threat, now deceased. Our website, which IMO kicked high ass, is also kaput, unfortunately. We were loud, fast, jagged and ratty, and deeply loved by dozens of borderline-alcoholic wiseasses. Me and a couple of the lads from that band are working on something new, but who knows when anything'll happen?

The last band I was in was called "the Watchmen", after the Alan Moore comic book, and the other band "the Watchmen", who were reportedly Tim McVeigh's favorite band. We were hardcore in the vein of Negative Approach. Our old website is still up.

Right now I've got something started a little poppier, along the lines of CIV, but no name yet. (We're toying with "8 Inch Judas")

Oh, and I'm a bass player with a nice Schecter and a rather loud Ampeg SVT-H 350.

Mmmm teeth rattling.

I'm not quite a member [though Toren recently said I was 'practically' a member] but I do have lyrics credits on a couple songs by The Darkest of the Hillside Thickets.

If I remember rightly, I helped on "Power Up" and "The Math Song" and also tried to make sense of the German gibberish in "Dies ist Unverschaemtheit".

Thanks for the kind words. Unfortunately, we're pretty much stuck in the pacific northwest, and don't get to go on the road as often as we like, much less making it out to DC.

Money, as always, is the big issue, so if you know of any deep-pocketed labels or individuals with a penchant for moody, emotional music, send 'em our way ;-)

My band is The Quadsound. We're based out of New York City (though I live across the Hudson River in Hoboken). I'm the lead singer and rhythm guitarist; we're a standard 4-piece. The sound is modern rock-n-roll with the old-style songwriting method smashed into it. Something not unlike The Jam in a traffic accident.

No sound clips on the site yet, unfortunately. Our 1st EP's stuff (which we no longer play) sounds weak compared to the stuff we're recording now, so wait a few weeks to listen.

Are we on a label? Hahahaha!!!! Does anyone know how difficult the NYC scene is? We can't even get people to come to our shows.

Maxwell's is amazing. They book great bands, the place is packed for the headliners, they serve good food. Hell, it's less than 8 blocks from my apartment.

But the thing is: you can get booked at Maxwell's once, but if you don't draw anyone you'll never get booked there again. I'm not complaining; everyone wants to play there, so it's pretty much a buyer's market. So I'm basically waiting to get any kind of fanbase before giving it a shot.

well, i tried to learn guitar, but i couldn't afford a good one, and at the time i was busy with a million other projects. avid music lover, but not enough time to be much of a musician.

so i went with the next best thing. built a nice music studio in my living room with turntables, mixer, dedicated box (thanks jonny290), and all kinds of other toys.

i have been spinning records for a couple years now off and on, and i'm just getting to the 'play out' phase, as opposed to jonny and my roomie who get bookings pretty regularly around the region.

also started a production company to put together and promote electronica events and our first party is Cry Havok! on April 26th. Should be fun, live ambient music PA followed by 12 djs in a total of 11 hours. Company website is www.thearmz.net, but both our flyer pics and the website are currently down while we tear apart our database to figure out what keeps crashing it. ;) Should be back up today or tomorrow.

(and for the record, electronica just barely fills a third of my total list of music that i love. i just never had the dedication and talent needed to play in a 'real' band. well, since high school sax!)

One of my bands, Grownup Trouble, will be playing the Baranof in Seattle at Greenwood and 85th. There is no cover and we get paid a cut of the bar, so I suggest bringing all of your hard-drinkin' buddies!

No CDs or websites yet, but we rock in a traditional country way. I play the pedal steel and the banjo. Two good time instruments for sure. Plus I finally got a cowboy hat after getting in trouble for showing up at our first gig without one.

I'm working on another project as well. This ones called Mayor West and isn't quite as far along in the getting gigs process. This one is more along the lines of Son Volt and Wilco crossed with Dylan. I play mostly National guitar in that one with some electric slide thrown in. We also need a drummer, so, uh, any Seattle-based plasticians that play the drums message me.

23.  I've been in many bands...
 by Hubris Jones  1
  at Thu 20 Mar 11:59amscore of 1

Currently I am working on a solo project with my four track in my studio (apartment. ha.). Sucks when you write songs and try to record them but never really took the time to figure out how to use the thing. I'm working on it. Even though I think I broke it.

I have been in at least three bands in the past — one in high school, years ago. We were way ahead of the curve. If it hadn't been for that whole college/move out of your parents' house/leave town thing, we would have been huge. And I would have hated myself for it (it was the generic pop-punk like you hear all over the radio these days, except we were playing it 8 years ago). We never had a real name. Ah well.

In college, I was in essentially the same band under various names and incarnations, at times we were called Ray Ray, Three Mile Hole (a reference to Boston's Big Dig), and my personal favorite, Gas Chicken and the Sloppy Bitches. All the bands were essentially indie-type noise pop. At our last show, we all drank WAY too much and came onstage to Pink Floyd's "Shine On You Crazy Diamond," hung the microphones from the ceiling, and played loud enough that I couldn't hear my girlfriend yelling at me the next day. I need to get the videotape of that set. We managed to play through two and a half songs before someone peed off the balcony of my friend's apartment, which brought the cops up.

When I move back to Boston, we're going to start up that band again, now that the bass player has actually learned his instrument.

I'm also working on an as-yet-unnamed project which sounds like Fugazi mixed with klezmer and Beethoven. We'll be huge in Belgium this time next week. You know, the power of the internet and all. Wynton Marsalis has agreed to produce our first album.

Most of this post is the truth. Most of it.

24.  I'm teaching myself guitar

..and so far it's slow going. My left hand has all sorts of trouble bending my fingers into chords and I constantly slip off strings when I play powerchords.

I can play the Meow Mix theme song, and I can make a decent go at a few Clash and Bouncing Souls songs. Oh, and I own Dramarama's "Anything Anything". Man I love that song!

Can anybody give me some equipment advice? I want to make that crunchy, buzzsaw sound that most modern punks play, but my guitar and amp sound way too clean. What do I need to do?

If you're just teaching yourself, it's maybe not a good idea to drop the kind of money it costs to get the sound you're talking about. You seriously ought to wait 'til you can play better before you go worrying about sonic matters. It's a distraction that can seriously hinder the pace at which you learn. You'll develop WAY better technique if you learn on a clean-sounding setup, or an acoustic.

For future reference once you've improved: if you've got serious green to burn and you're truly committed to this, try a Mesa Engineering Dual Rectifier. Their Triple rectifier is 50 watts more powerful, but that means you need more pre-gain to get it to clip, which makes for a subtly different sound. Also, a Gretsch or Gibson guitar (or a VERY well-built replica) will go a long way in getting the natural overtones that keep a distorted sound from getting too thin and airy. Les Pauls are the way to go for that, but again, big bucks. But honestly, there's no way to get that humongous crunch with cheap equipment. Such gear usually tends to make your intended muscular "chug-chug-chug" sound more like a pathetic "shim-shim-shim."

My setup is a Fender Strat modded with wide-gauge fret wire and a humbucker at the bridge, played direct (no effects) through an old Marshall JCM 800, but I'm not going for chunk, I'm into rip-your-head-off shrillness.

And I agree with you 100% about that Dramarama tune. God-damn, that fucker's a killer!

That's what I've always hated about playing Strats: they're so damned tinny. And there's hardly anything you can do to smooth 'em out in the midrange.

It's a popular sound, I know, but I prefer my Charvel 450. It's got a nice, smooth, mellow midrange that buzzes and growls quite satisfactorily through a Boss HM-2 pedal (which I favor because it's got its own color controls for the distortion) into a Crate amp.

Although...I had $9000 budgeted for a move that only ended up costing $1500 (amazing how many people want to give away furniture when they hear you're moving!) so I'm thinking about setting myself up with a second rig, since the gear above is between 8-10 years old at this point. It might actually be time to live the dream and pick up a Les Paul Custom and a Marshall stack...but I'm gonna wait on some catalogs before I commit. ;)

SO off-topic now, but WTF, I love this shit...

The necks on Charvels are fantastic. I'd get one in a minute for just that reason if the overall look of the things suited me more.

I used to play a '76 Les Paul deluxe through the same JCM800 I still use — rrrrrowwwrrr. I'm telling you, if you do go for the Gibson/Marshall combination, you are gonna have one hell of a fun shopping trip. Ever had a Marshall before? If not, be aware that they're not made to the tightest of tolerances. Any given Marshall of any given model can sound noticeably different from the very next one off the line (this only applies to all-tube models, not Mos-Fets or Valvestates). If you try one and hate the sound, try another of the same model and you may find you like it. My JCM800 that no-one's ever gonna take from me 'til I'm fuckin' DEAD is my 3rd, and I didn't care as much for the first two. I lucked into it actually, from a friend who was short of rent money. Additionally, there can be a pretty wide variance in the thickness of Gibson necks, so you might not want to buy your guitar or amp from a catalog. Even if it means resorting to an evil big-box music store, I wouldn't buy either of those brands without playing the individual piece you mean to buy beforehand.

On Strat tinniness: it can be massaged, with the effect of a more full-bodied treble sound. Though there's no making a classic Fender sound bassy — that's a matter of scale length and string angle at the nut and the bridge, so no amount of spare-parts futzing can change it — using a good, high-gain humbucker at the bridge (the only pickup I use, the others, though more midrangey for obvious reasons, sound too donky for my taste) and heavy-gauge strings, like 11s (or at least 10s if you're way big on bends) gets me the sound I spent years trying to get.

On preview: spell check suggests hamburger for humbucker. Cool.

I didn't heed the advice I gave, either, so when I outgrew three-chords-and-a-cloud-of-dust, I pretty much had to start learning to play all over again, which was frustrating as hell.

BTW, the guys in the Clash, esp. Mick Jones, could play really well, they just chose simplicity.

As a band, they certainly developed a level of virtuosity over time. That being said, I'm reasonably sure that I can remember an interview on Story of the Clash or something like that where one or the other of them reminisced about being stuck in a band with a number of other guys "who could play quite well," then seeing the Sex Pistols and thinking, hey, I can do that....

            stand up, keep fighting.

I used to be in Skeletongue*. We were proggy, punky and sloppy. Those were recorded 2 weeks before we amicably split ways, in one long night in a basement in minneapolis. It was 10 below (F) and all we had was a Fostex 4 track.

Now I'm in Gecko. It's 3-6 guys with acoustic guitars playing prog rock. Those were recorded on a digital video camera in a very live room at Colorado College the day we opened for the California Guitar Trio, who are some real nice guys.

Still waiting for someone to post some mp3s of Supertramp and claim that he/she is the bass player,

Me too. I have seen Frip, Crimson, Belew, Levin all those guys as a group and individually a bunch of times over the years.

I have was in this band called Dirt Clod that was super into King Crimson/Primus sort of stuff.

In the begining my playing was kind of starkly divided between an albert king style and robert frip style. Over the years my use of tones has really grown to the point that I don't feel the difference between styles as much anymore.

Frip's take on tonal intervals is pretty liberating. Did you ever get into Sonny Sharrock?

I used to be in a band. Actually, several.

Band 1, Technicolor Yawn (ninth grade, or thereabouts.) Our one performable song is a cover of Steve Miller's "Jet Airliner." Strange.

Band 2, Crucible, (tenth grade). I'm stuck singing. Difficult, when your voice is changing. Our audition tape for the variety show features my voice cracking horrifically during a terrible rendition of Ozzy's "Crazy Train."

Band 3, Orange Bison (11th -12th grades). The cover band of choice in our high school. Highlights include Cream's "White Room," U2's "Running to Stand Still," and Hendrix's "Foxy Lady." This is the band that succeedes in eventually getting me laid.

Band 4, FDIC (eleventh grade, concurrent with Orange Bison). Folk music, including "Circle of the Sun." After one performance, a spectator says, "It was so nice of you to let the retarded boy play violin for you." Us: "Jaime? He's going to Harvard next year."

Band 5, Bread and Cheese (twelfth grade, concurrent with Orange Bison). Covers ranging from the Beatles to — god forgive us — Billy Joel. To this day I remember the words to "Big Man on Mulberry Street."

Band 6, The Testostertones (1st year college). All-male a cappella group. During rehearsal, controversy erupts when one member wants to name us "Buns and Hoses." Band unity is shaky, but we enjoy ourselves. At first performance, we're so glad to have actually gotten it over with that we forget to bow and do a group hug instead. Whoops.

Band 7, Instrumentally Challenged (2nd-3rd year college). Co-ed a cappella group. I find that I can fake my way through a tenor. This is the band that would have gotten me laid many times over if I hadn't been dating someone at the time. We were shockingly good. If any IC members read this, shoot me a note.

Now: nuttin'. My singing is confined to my car, and I only rarely pull out my violin, although I did accompany a friend recently when he wanted a fiddler to do Richard Shindell's "Reunion Hill" with him. That was fun. But as I hurtle toward my thirties, I find myself increasingly missing playing more, singing more, and the experience of making music.

Ooh, something I feel like I can comment on. Exciting!

Music is the only thing I do, as can be readily shown by my high school grade average. I'm studying at Cal State Hayward now, under Tim Smith (the greatest conductor I've ever met) and playing in both of their wind ensembles.

But I've also got a few bands.
-Formerly Bridgeway is an odd organism, described by one person as an "anti-genre band". Kindof in the same area as The Beta Band, I guess. We tend to have a completely different sound on every song, defined only by our playing styles. In this group, I play everything from keyboards to bass to Game Boy and Kaoss Pad; a total of 18 instruments. We have new studio recordings that sound much better than the stuff on that site, but those mp3s are still a good listen.
-Then there's Outbound, my jazz-rock jam band thing. I'm the oldest person in the band at 19, which is amusing, but they're all pretty solid players. All very creative, and it makes for some great music. There's some stuff of theirs here. Again, Keyboards, bass, electronics is my role.
-I also have another band forming that has no available recordings, but you know it's good 'cause I formed it with the top guitarist at Cal Hayward. So there. (I'm playing Bass, Keyboards and Photo-Theremin in this one.)
-Finally, there is my solo work. I keep it here. Mostly electronic and piano works, but I'm trying to find some decent multi-tracking software so I can write a trombone quartet and record it myself.
-On top of this, I play in a couple orchestras and jazz groups and do freelance music and sound creating gigs. I've been scoring a lot of plays lately. And making fish noises.
-Upcoming projects include a "new music ensemble" (with two trombones, electronics, percussion and a pump organ) and a keyboard metal band. Stay tuned.

              Hear my music.

i'm a little reticent to even mention it, since i don't yet consider myself a musician and i don't have a band, but i started playing harmonica (or "harp," if you wanna sound cool, which i do) a few years ago. year before last i started jamming with a bunch of coworkers. one plays guitar and sax, another, who makes guitars in his spare time, has a full basement "studio" with drums, guitars, amps, bass, keys, mics, and an 8track. one of our drummers plays in a NY jazz-rock band called PS. anyway... i've got a photo of us at a jam, but no web space to put it on. two other co-workers, canadians, make electronica music in their spare time (no website, sorry). each time we've gotten together has been awesome, and i always look forward to doing it again.
recently i joined a "student band." 2 guitars, 2 keys, bass, drums, a singer and me. we're working up some blues standards for credit at a local university, and if we get our shit together, we'll actually play out in a few months. we aren't great, maybe not even quite good, but it's a blast and i'm learning.
i love playing blues, jazz, and latin music on harmonica (as well as rock and swing and anything else i can figure out), and it would be cool to learn lots of different types of harp (there's bass, chord, diatonic, and chromatic, to name a few) to play different roles in different situations. i also recently took up the cuatro, which is a Puerto Rican folk-guitar, easily the purest symbol of Puerto Rican music. it also sounds killer for blues music. i may pick up a cheapy keyboard to help learn theory.
i'm happy to count among my friends many (sometimes great!) musicians of different stripes and i have to say there's nothing quite like being able to make music. it's about the coolest thing i've ever done. if i'm lucky, years from now i could actually be making some money playing harp, or at least be able to go out and sit-in with people for the sheer blast of it all.

This is slightly off-topic, but I vaguely remember a band during the eighties who went by the name:

Tears For Agnes is my more serious, musical project, working with Jordan Smith and Melissa Shong on electronic/acoustic music. No lyrics, so that eliminates a good 80% of the usual audience. A little droney, but that's on purpose.

Slow Andy is the punk band I drum too fast for, even though they told me to drum faster. It's good fun, we play in the central PA area, and have a show with the Dead 50s on April 5th at Murph's Other Bar in York. Good fun :)

I do a lot of shit, as my profile indicates, but here's a longer rundown.

I played violin all through school, and I still do, I just don't take lessons. I don't have a permanent place to do this yet, but I do end up doing it in my band at one point or another. It's on a lot of my solo stuff.

I learned guitar and that's now my primary instrument. I also learned to write songs on the guitar.

I taught myself computer music by doing general MIDI stuff with Cakewalk 8 years ago or so, and it sounded shitty, but it was fun. I got better but I still tend towards the lo-fi end and don't own a synth (just use, uh, "borrowed" soft synths). I did instrumentals but recently figured out how to write synth-pop songs usually using FruityLoops, which roxx0rs.

I also play with varying skill: harmonica, viola, bass, accordian, organ, drums. And I sing, which I'm getting better and better at.

A few years ago I felt like I had hit a barrier with music and wasn't able to do anything: I couldn't get in a band for the life of me and was writing folky stuff for my 12-string, which I didn't really want to be doing. So I sat down one summer that I was working in an elementary school with my four-track, a pickup on my acoustic, a delay pedal and a mini-amp, and made an album. It was a weird mix of Mogwai, tape-loop stuff, found sound, and noise-rock. I liked it, even if I didn't think anyone else would, but it got me going.

So now I make solo records, fairly lo-fi sounding, under the name The Claps. You can find some of it here. The best song is "1000 Ashes." The Original Position is good too, but will be recorded with real drums pretty soon. The sound varies a lot, but it's sort of Becky if his early stuff was more country and less folk / blues. I also really enjoy doing musically-backed spoken word stuff.

I am also in a synth-pop band named Galvanized. They had been around for a while when I joined, but since then I've started writing all the songs and producing them. Now the keyboard player quit, so my sequenced computer parts form the backbone and we play over that. Website is here. I particularly recommend downloading "Beatbox" from this page. We play around New York quite a lot. I do my best to make us sound like Black Box Recorder, but I don't always succeed.

I have recently formed a band with two college friends who I've waited for in New York for a year and a half, but they're here, and I love 'em. We call ourselves The Song Corporation and are about to record our demo, but you can find some stuff we did in college here. Both me and Kristie write songs, so our sound varies a lot, but we're generally indie or noise rock. Think Yo La Tengo or Sonic Youth sometimes, Elvis Costello other times.

I used to split my music time with writing, but music is what I primarily do now, so I do a lot of other stuff puttering around. Here are some other MP3's if you're curious:

Drop me a message if you're around NYC and would like to try and play with either of my bands, or just me, I guess. Or if you want something produced, as I have a rickety home studio. Or if you play bass and would like to join The Song Corporation--we could use someone! I also just put out a proper CD as The Claps, so you could probably send me $2 and I would send you one of those.

Fruityloops is probably my main tool, and has been for a few years. It's a beautiful app, and if you got the money it is well worth the price.
It comes with a lifetime of upgrades, can't beat that.

I also use to play violin and bass geetar, but that was too many brain cells ago.

Yeah--apparently one of my fav musical guys, Tom Ellard of Severed Heads, has been using the new versions of FL and stuff like FruityScratch (I don't have the new versions, so apologies if I'm getting this wrong) do to stuff live, which I haven't really worked out yet, but it sounds pretty cool. I should do that upgrade thing sometime.

unfortunately, i haven't been in a band for a while. most of this is due to my complete inability to actually "play" any instruments, at least the way most folks seem to want you to.

back in my home town, tallahasee, florida, however, most of my friends were in bands and i had a guitar and a bunch of drums, so we were always throwing bands together to play at parties. the main guy who booked shows in town, when he was really desperate, would sometimes ask if i could pull something together for an opening act.

the first band was "i challenge death," which consisted of me on drums/garbage cans, 2 bass players, a guitarist, and my sister playing one of my guitars with a saw blade. we opened for Royal Trux, but soon disbanded, b/c the guitar player, who was in the metal band "Darth Vader's Church," found it too humiliating to be on stage with the likes of the rest of us.

the next band was "homoerotic trifecta," which was just 2 of us: me on guitar/singing and a friend on drums. we played a few shows, and then a 2 bass players jumped on board and we turned into "i guard the sheep," which turned out to be my only band to last more than a few weeks. we were noisy and sloppy, mostly b/c that is the only way i can play. we released a split 7", of which i still have a bunch of copies i do not know what to do with. we also faked a story about our singer being in a wheelchair to get on some soupy MTV unfiltered program, but were rejected at the last minute...

we broke up so i could come to chapel hill for graduate school. but i have never been able to find anyone around here who will tolerate my lack of musical skill , and thus spend my time agonizing over my dissertation...

i really miss it though. i absolutely loved being on stage, even though i had no idea what i was doing

i make non-musical portions of the aloha misc. media house (websites and hats, mainly), but very special friends of mine make music there too:

Panty Boy — dinky beat discotheque brilliance. songs about monkeypods and lemonade and so on, but strangely skillful. they are making the soundtrack for the video game i am making starring them! CDs and MP3s at that link.

Monsieur Guy — tape-sample-tastic analog electro stuff by an amateur european hair stylist. name pronounced 'ghee.' CDs and MP3s at that link.

Pillowfight — members of Panty Boy with extra talent, all playing serious music on acoustic instruments with accordian and girl-boy harmony. folky but not flakey. ne pas de mp3s, but there are local shows in April.

other buddies (less special, ha ha):

Chet — these fine folks don't seem to have an internet presence, but their new CD 'The Tiger Is In the Window' is fantastic! Guitar, organ, drums, and crooning (i do mean crooning) in a mellow indie-rock / art-rock manner. residents of victoria, bc, go to their constant shows! they reliably play with other good bands (local and imported).

hooray all rock stars. it's nice to know plasticians do something besides bicker with each other :)

I'm the former bass player for the former band Best Revenge. I left a little over a year ago, and the band broke up a few months back. But if you want fun/sexy/political queer punk rock, you can still buy the CD ["Starts With You"] online from Spitshine Records, along with stylish "Punk as Fuck" Ts and stuff from a bunch of great queer punk bands.

I haven't been in a band for several years now — between work and graduate school and volunteer activities, I don't foresee it in the near future. My brother and I have thrown around the idea of a Tragically Hip cover band — we're only a couple of hours from their home base of Kingston and we know many of their tunes — but, again, not sure I could find the time.

The last band I was in that practiced regularly (some would say "irregularly") was a trio that mostly performed U2 cover songs. Before that, I was the guitar part of an acoustic duo; my partner was a really good blues singer. She was the talent of the band, and we mostly did benefits and she was, understandably, more likely to sing with her real band that could charge actual money.

Back in my high school years, I was a mean percussionist/backup singer for the East Brutus Street Band, a shortlived and fairly undertalented collective. I also served as the road manager for a band called Blizzard, during which I was allowed to get up and sing backup on their finale, "I Wanna Rock 'n' Roll All Night," or whatever that KISS song is called. If we were all drunk, it sounded pretty decent.

Strangely, since I stopped playing in bands, I think I've improved. Bass and guitar are my main instruments, with some piano, but I've just learned to play the bhodran, a Celtic drum. Much as I cleave to the pop/rock thing, I would love to do a (don't laugh) Cetlic/trip hop combo — think Afro Celt Sound System or Ashley MacIsaac. May never happen, but I'm considering casing future editions of my local Irish pub's open mic nights just in case.

Impresive synchonicity today. KOMPRESSOR's newest, Underground Archives, popped up in my mailbox this afternoon. If anyone cares, I'll post a review. First listen reaction: good, not great. Random thought: hearing KOMPRESSOR do one of those "star pimping a radio station" bits (Duluth, Minnesota) is kind of odd, but funny.

...but I know what I like.

I entertain fantasies of being in a band...sadly, I couldn't hold a tune if it had a handle on it.

One of the other bbs that I visit as much as this place is a Pearl Jam fan forum. A couple of people from there are pretty talented and have bands, so I figure I'll give them a plug here:

              • Check out Joe Whaley, out of Columbus, MS; and
              • A band called Engine of the Ocean, out of Fort Worth, TX.; and
              • Allison Crowe

All of these guys are way more talented than I could ever hope to be.

I think Alphamonkey linked his (her?) band name in his sig some time ago and curiosity got me to click it. Since then I downloaded all their songs and have them in a few of my playlists. A fav of mine in "Hunters and Gatherers".

Wow. That's nice to hear. H&G is one of my favs so it's nice to find out someone else has made a space for it.

dadsbigplan is really just me (Aaron Weber) and a couple revolving players. Most of the recordings on the site are little 4 Track and 2 Track recordings that I do by my lonesome (except when otherwise credited)

I've just acquired some new (and higher quality than I've previously worked with) recording gear so in the next few weeks I'll be re-recording nearly all of the songs on the site if for no other reason than to clean up the production and put to use the recording and mixing skills I've tried to pick up.

At times I'm almost embarrassed by the amateurish presentation of those songs. Hopefully I can put the polish and gleam on those tracks that I think deserve a higher quality recording, not just the home demo lo-fi sound that they carry now. (Hunters & Gatherers will probably not be re-recorded, though it may be re-mixed. It was a happy accident of recording that produced some of the sounds and I'd rather not tempt fate by trying to reproduce them.) In addition to the re-releases, there will be roughly 15-20 new songs added, most of which were written in the last few months. I've got everything from more mopey rock (as I call it), to power-pop, to Bill Withers-esque numbers, to straight up get-drunk-alt/country numbers. Hopefully they'll be something you'll enjoy...the new song 'untitled' is a bit of a throwaway, but I had a lot of fun with the harmonies and arranging. It's not near professional quality recording, but I'm still getting used to this new gear...

So check back, or make use of the update mailer that will be implemented in the next several days.

Thanks for the kind words, and for letting me know that occassionaly I hit the mark. Most of these songs are deeply personal, so it's great to know that maybe someone gets it.

Hey, I'm glad to encourage you; your songs are worth it.

Though you're right in that they could take a good bit of spit-and-polish, your songs have a lot of potential and I'm glad you're taking the time to clean them up. I can't wait to hear your re-recordings and I'm looking forward to your new songs.

And, well, just because I'm corny that way, your link has my sig for a while, in the off chance someone else's curiosity will be piqued the same way mine was.

I wish you all the best.

                  Thanks for asking.

The first song is called George Bush Hates To Drink and is a techno mix of the famous drunken, sneering Smoking Gun clip.

The second song is called Oscillator and is just electronics without any vocal.

Hope you all enjoy, and post if you do.

If so, I wrote these songs for you!

Almost everyone in my immediate family plays one or more instruments, so I suppose its a blood-borne condition. At a young age, I developed a habit of hitting things with other things to see what sounds I could make, only now there's more technology involved.

I recently made the mistake of thinking I could temporarily put aside music in order to more fully devote my time to real-world things, which was quickly followed by listlessness and melancholia. I'm really not after the groupies, tour buses and rock and roll lifestyle, I'm just trying to get up in the morning, like everyone else. Its working out well so far.

Back in the day I had a band in Boston called The Blue Tick Hound. Roots rock mostly. If you ever encounter a folk song called "Weeds," it's probably mine. (Some friends in Oklahoma rearranged and recorded it. Think they called themselves "Enough Rope.")

I'd love to start up a band here in Atlanta. I'm thinking a punk band called "The Rev. Jackass Gospel Hour." I already have a friend to play the chicken coop, and I've got the guitar and vocals. Oh yeah, and this chorus:

                  Crotch rock it!
                  Ready for fli-ight
                  Crotch rock it!
                  Into the ni-ight
                  Crotch rock it!
                  Gonna make it all right
                  Crotch rocket! Crotch rocket!

And then Tia Carrera says: "Rock it, rock it, rock it to me crotch rocket." (Twice.)

No, really, I wrote it myself. And you have to supply all the equipment and travel to my place. I'm busy.

I make experimental electronic music in the vein of Squarepusher and Aphex Twin. Closer yet to Otto von Schirach, if that name means anything to anyone here (I hope not TOO close).

I have had a few close calls with the labels I am interested in most, but now a state of PA grant will pay for me to self-publish. I really don't have any new good music online- but I can link to two still good but much older pieces of tracks here:

I was talked into joining a classical string ensemble last winter. The schtick is that we all ride in Chicago Critical Mass, a monthly bike ride; hence, we're an eight-strong ensemble as the rides assemble and a quartet on wheels once the ride gets going.

I would be violating some great law of mindless self-promotion if I didn't throw a link to myself, currently terrorizing junior proms and dances for senior citizens at the VFW under the name oscitant. The usual laptop beat thievery — Kraftwerk and Howie B. would be two obvious influences. In its defense, I listen to a whole lot of music, and still find my own stuff to be amusing even after listening to it a hundred times. At the end of the day that's all you can hope for, right...?

I've been doing this music game for a while, but I'm just starting to do my own music rather than backing up other people. I'd love to hear some opinions about my songs.

I'm not in the band, but I like 'em so much that I did the cover art for their CD "Garden State." They do everything from Belle & Sebastian-ish pop to Ween-like freakouts... and they're great guys as well.

Although I'm not in a "real," band, I do play with friends in a pick up type thing & we try to get together at least once a month (we all live in 3 different places, about 2-3 hours apart).

In any case, I have really enjoyed reading through this thread. It's such a nice change to see so many people being complimentary & not flaming each other over opposing viewpoints. While I realize that's a big part of what makes Plastic interesting, it's still cool to so many people with common interests.

There should be more threads like this that actually spotlight who we are & what we're about.

I'm in a band called The Rude Mechanicals. We're based in Toronto, ON but originally from Charlottetown, PEI. Currently working on our third album with producer Moe Berg, formerly of Canadian power pop legends, The Pursuit of Happiness. I guess we sound like Burton Cummings singing for pre-YHFT Wilco, produced by Elvis Costello after having listened to Jason Falkner for two months straight.

I also play in a traditional country band in Toronto: Steve Ketchen and the Kensington Hillbillies. We play everything from bluegrass to western swing and feature some of the best players in the city, including Mr. James Gray of Blue Rodeo.

Out of all this, the most important fact is that I play bass. ;-) Any other bottom dwellers out there?

Yeah, fours years and I still can't play "Back in Black". Mostly due to lack of practicing. Wife and kids and stuff. Ahh well.

Anyway, I'm trying the learn more blues-rocky stuff with a little Metal (Old skool 'Tallica) thrown in every now and then.

So no, there is no band, and probably never will be.

Oh yeah, and I picked up a copy of Cakewalk Guitar Tracks, which I bought about $20 on sale at good ol' Guitar Center and works sorta like a multi-track recorder, for those who are interested.

I used to be in the world's greatest pop/rock/indie/schmindie band, Regular Einstein. Then I lost a lot of hearing in both my ears and now I am a slightly more subdued solo act.

The band I'm associated with is Chicago's The Detholz! It's a rather amusingly pop-ish quintet+1, and damn do we put on a great show. You'll even have an opportunity to see us next week at Shubas next Friday night, opening for King Missile (who brought you 90s classic Detachable Penis). We will also be playing in Indianapolis the following Thursday at Melody Inn.

I also have a solo/duo performance project active right now, known variously as Sheath (mp3.com music samples) and Surrounded By Monarchs. I'm premiering a new piece titled Paradise on Tuesday, April 1st at the Hungry Brain, 2318 W. Belmont, Chicago, as part of the avant-jazz Emerging Improvisers series, not that it's either jazz or improvised (go figure).

for about three years now I've been making music in San Francisco as both t spigot and t versus T, in conjunction with my good friend Trancenden. We do live downtempo/funky beats with samplers, turntables, live bass and guitar, and whatever else we have lying around. Our record comes out on Water (distributed by Universal) in April.

We're always looking for other live electronic downtempo/funky beats acts to do shows with, and we play out fairly regularly, so please do come check us out.

I noticed that there's like, what, close to zero girls posting on this topic. What's up with that?

I just bought a new guitar two weeks ago which has totally changed my musical focus. Prior to my sparkly Gretsch, I had a big old 335 copy which wasn't good for much at all. Now I'm definitely veering more towards rock with overdrive. But I don't have a drum kit so I need to find a good synth or software program. And I need some time to actually write.

Apart from that my fiancee and I have been putting together some avant-garde noise pieces which are essentially looped drum parts interspersed with stretched violin, keyboard and guitar feedback.
